Chhath Puja 2024: India is a land of arts and culture. Different Indian states have different festivals and rituals. Every year, it is celebrated clocked twice during two Indian months – Chaitra (March-April) and Kartika (October – November). Chhath Puja is considered one of the most auspicious and sacred festivals of Hindus. According to the Hindu calendar, Chhath Puja is observed on the Shashtji Tithi of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month, which often falls between October and November on the Gregorian calendar.

Chhath Puja Significance:

Chhath Puja is dedicated to the Sun God (Surya Dev) and Chhathi (Shashti) Devi or Maiya (Mother). It is a Hindu Vedic festival celebrated in most parts of Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh. In addition, it is also celebrated in Madhya Pradesh in India and some parts of Nepal.

Chhath Puja is the most popular and famous and occurs 6 days after Diwali in Bihar. Rama, a rural artisan of Samoolam Crafts India in Gaya (Bihar) said, “It falls in Suklapaskh of Kartika Maasa (month).” He also said that Shukla Paksha is the waxing moon period of 15 days, starting on a new moon(Amavasya) and ending on a fall moon (Purnima).

During the four days of celebrations, devotees seek Lord Sun’s blessing and pray to keep the family healthy and wealthy. This auspicious day is dedicated to offering prayers to Lord Surya and taking a dip in the holy waters of Ganga. This day honors the benevolent work of Lord Surya and his wife for providing this beautiful life on earth.

Moreover,Women celebrate the four-day-long period with happy festivities. Further, they sing songs and have a lot of color in their lives, surrounding clothing, and food. Further, women keep a strict fast without water, which is known as Nir jal Vrat.

Plus, women break the fast by cooking and eating a range of smile, homecooked but delectable dishes like:

  • Chana dal (cooked Bengal gram)
  • Arwa chawal (boiled rice) (arwa chawal)
  • Lauki sabji and saag (bottle gourd curry and greens)
  • Mitti ke bartan mein banni gur ka kheer (rice pudding cooked in an earthen pot).
