Busan International Film Festival started With Netflix War Epic ‘Uprising’

The 29th Busan International Film Festival started today, October 2, with the Netflix War Epic ‘Uprising’. It will run until October 11. Moreover, the film festival opens today with the international premiere of Uprising. It director Kim Sang-man’s historical war epic written by Park Chan-wook (Oldboy) and distributed by Netflix.

As per the report, the 29th edition of the 10-day Busan International Film Festival closes with Singaporean director Eric Khoo’s Spirit World, starring French screen legend Catherine Deneuve.

Furthermore, the Netflix War Epic ‘Uprising’ is the first streaming title to be invited to screen as the festival’s opening film. Park Do-shin, the festival’s acting director, who was previously Busan’s senior programmer said, “Uprising is a charming historical drama put together by an outstanding team of directors, writers and actors while Khoo’s Spirit World is a co-production that explores the fundamental questions of human existence and the meaning of life through beautiful cinematic expression.”

Moreover, Park Boyoung and Ahn Jaehong will host the opening ceremony of the 29th Busan International Film Festival. In 2024, a total of 278 films from 63 countries, including 54 screenings as part of the Community BIFF, will be presented on 26 screens in five theatre venues, including:

  • Busan Cinema Center
  • CGV Centum City
  • LOTTE CINEMA Centum City
  • KOFIC Theater
  • MEGABOX Busan Theater.

29th Busan International Film Festival: Awards

Two awards will be presented at the opening ceremony of the festival.

  • Asian Filmmaker of the Year Award: It is given to a person or organization who has shown a remarkable contribution to the development of the Asian film industry an culture throughout the year.
  • Korean Cinema Award: is presented to cineastes who have made a notable contribution towards the globalization of Korean cinema

Busan International Film Festival: Day 01

The Film Festival opening ceremony will be live today at 6 PM on official Naver TV (tv.naver.com/biff23). However, the event time may change depending on the program on the day.

With the live-streaming, people will enjoy the atmosphere of Asia’s largest film festival. Further, the festival will take place from Oct 2 (Wed) to Oct 11 (Fri). At Busan Cinema Center and its surrounding areas.

In addition, Park Kwang-su, a former director was appointed festival president in February. Moreover, he reassured Busan enthusiasts at a press conference in September 2024 that this year’s event will return to some of the old festival’s famous traditions.
